game-on-2New Year’s Resolutions Suck…

Most of the time they’re bull… 93.5% of people make a big list of things they’re going to change this year and then DON’T follow through…

So instead of focusing on ‘resolutions’ we decided to do a little spin on the words and give you 4 New Year’s REVELATIONS that will actually help you follow through with your goals for your life & biz…

New Year’s Revelation #1

You’re a human BE-ing… not a human DO-ing

The typical New Year’s resolution is centered around performance or DOING:

“I want to do more marketing”
“I want to do speaking gigs”
“I want to host a live event”
“I want to lose weight”
“I want to eat better”

Here’s a major problemo… These kind of goals only refer to the OUTER parts of personal development – our performance or appearance. This is kind of like putting on a bandaid instead of healing the underlying infection, right?

So to have the best chance for lasting success and permanent behavior change in your life & biz… Try to dig a little deeper… Address your goals at the most basic level… Who you are… who you think you are… who you say you are.

A cool quote I read somewhere said, “Your current behaviors are simply a reflection of your current identity. To change your behavior for good, you need to start believing new things about yourself.”

So don’t start off the year making gigantic declarations about what you’re going to DO and accomplish. Simply give yourself an identity change. Start seeing yourself as a booty-kicking marketer. Start seeing yourself as a smart, strategy-following super-marketer.

“I am the type of person who takes charge of my life & business by making smart marketing decisions daily. I am the type of person who loves and embraces marketing of business. I am a hardcore entrepreneur and I never stop marketing. ”

When you set a new identity for yourself, every other decision you make becomes easier – it’s either part of who you are or it’s not. If you’re the type of person now that “never stops marketing” guess what you’ll be doing tomorrow afternoon instead of perusing Pinterest? Getting down to business!

New Year’s Revelation #2

The Less You Do – The More You Do

When people set out to change their business, they make a list that looks something like this:

• Make more sales
• Learn Pinterest
• Learn podcasting
• Learn video marketing
• Put on live workshops
• Be a better networker
• Learn Facebook Ads
• Close Sales Calls better
• Make more phone calls
• Connect more
• Engage more
• Chat on Facebook less
• Go to sleep earlier
• Wake up earlier

Buuuuut, there’s another major problem here… there are way too many things on this list!

There’s a lot of power in being FOCUSED… in doing something WELL… in finishing… in conquering. But when you’re scattered, the you-know-what-eee hits the fan… and you get no results… ever. That just leads to more doubt and fear next time you try to do something.

Through our own business and working with private coaching clients, we’ve seen this play out firsthand. You’ve got to pick ONE THING to learn, do, launch & cash in before taking on something new. Got it? LEARN… DO… LAUNCH… CASH-IN (complete all those steps).

So many times you learn whatever is in front of you, bite whatever is dangled, going in every direction at the same time. Have you ever seen folks putting on a webinar, teleclass or workshop EVERY MONTH? All on different topics… all over the place? There’s no focus… they’re just trying anything and everything… all… the … time! No wonder folks are worn out?

But did you know that we only did THREE WEBINARS the entire year of 2013? And we only launched 1 program? Yep, that’s right… and we made waaaaay over 6 figures… crushing our financial goal by 12%!

Don’t overwhelm your business with new changes. Do less. Pick ONE thing this month and work on it. As you learn a new marketing skill… do it until it becomes second nature (or you can put it on autopilot)… THEN… and ONLY THEN start a new thing.

New Year’s Revelation #3

What Gets Measured – Gets Improved

Let’s take a look at that long list of goals again:

• Make more sales
• Learn Pinterest
• Learn podcasting
• Learn video marketing
• Put on live workshops
• Be a better networker
• Learn Facebook Ads
• Close Sales Calls better
• Make more phone calls
• Connect more
• Engage more
• Chat on Facebook less
• Go to sleep earlier
• Wake up earlier

Holy crap! The problem is that it’s way too vague. There’s no way to tell if you’re succeeding or failing in business. It’s like getting a smiley face on your report card instead of an A+ or a C-

You don’t know what the heck the smiley face means… What needs to change… what parts were good?

Be specific with any goals so that you can measure your progress and check off a box that says “I accomplished this goal”… I mean, think about it… “Learn Facebook Ads” could be something you do for a lifetime, right? You’ve got to be able to measure when you’ve accomplished it and are done – Or if you need improvement.

What gets measured, gets improved. The more specific you can be in your goals, the easier it is for you to say “yes, I did this” or “no, I did not do this.” When it’s vague and mysterious, there’s all sorts of wiggle room for you to rationalize, “well, I kinda did it!” or “I tried at least.”

New Year’s Revelation #4

Where There’s Support – There’s Success

When you gave up or didn’t hit your business goals for last year, what happened?

Probably nothing! You looked back a few months later and said, “oh yeah, remember when I said I was going to do ________. Oh well!”

There was no accountability when you gave up, which meant there was no real drive for you to succeed other than “you wanted to be better.”

Learning new things… changing habits … measuring… being consistent… following through… all that good stuff is not very easy. Seriously… get yourself a mentor or a coach.

And lastly… You’re not in this alone folksies. We’re here to support you on your biz journey… But you also need to want this for yourself, and you need to be smart about how you approach it in the coming year.  If you were digging this post we invite you to join the “Freedom Fighter Movement” (free Facebook Group) where we share tons of strategies, ideas and actionable, marketing tips you can use to grow your business (and meet a lot of other cool people with common goals + values).
