When you are a purposeful entrepreneur, you do what you love, you help people, you empower folks, you inspire… and you typically hate selling.

Everyone has taken notice that people are digging deeper in life and business and that a major challenge facing women in business is that you need to be able to make money, but you really don’t like the feeling you get when selling.  It makes you feel icky, yucko, gross, disgusting and just plain ewwww, right?

So there’s been a lot of hype going around about ‘authentic marketing’ and people offering training that is teaching you to ‘not be salesy’.

 

But if you misapply the ‘non-salesy’ principle, you’ll be broke.

When you don’t actually sign up to take these classes, or join the online programs, or pay the money to go to the events, you’re not hearing the whole story.  You’re hearing ‘don’t be salesy’ and misapplying that to mean ‘don’t sell’. 

 

Make an even greater impact.

I see so many talented, powerful, gifted women just giving stuff away, spending countless hours taking care of their tribe, making a huge difference in the world.  But you’re not making any impact on your lifestyle.  You’re not making any impact on your income. 

I don’t know how many teleclasses or webinars I’ve attended that were so packed with value that people on the call were salivating at the thought of buying what they’ve got, but there was no close at the end.  I’ve been to tons of events where the fabulous speakers that everyone loved (and would have gladly paid money to work with) did not make an offer.  Why?

Somewhere along the lines, you’ve thought that if you’re just a great women, an inspiring woman, and you give craploads of value, that people will just request to do business with you.  That’s not the message the ‘non salesy’ people are trying to teach you.

 

All your favorite ‘non salesy’ millionaire women mentors are super salesy… but you just don’t hear it.  WHY?

Anyways, on with the story… Marie Forleo talks about the same ‘non salesy’ issues.  And she’s a mega-millionaire… and… yep… some think she’s ‘salesy’ too.

The reason you don’t hear it or see it is because they are speaking right into your very heart.  They know you better than you know yourself.  They know what you struggle with and they provide real solutions to help you.

They know how to do sales well.  They know how to do sales in a way that serves.  But oh yes, they are salesy, in the sense that they sell like a mutha, non-stop selling in fact!

So there’s really NO SUCH THING as ‘non-salesy’… If you want to make money with your business, you need to be doing and asking for sales.  ‘Non-Salesy’ is just a phrase they coined to relate to you, to show you how to in fact DO SALES, but do it in a way that YOU can feel good about.

You’re screwing it up when you think it means to be passive, to rely on hope or luck, or to just wait around for people to ask you if they can buy from you.  I guarantee you that any sales guru out there ‘pushing’ this ‘non-salesy’ lingo fully intends for you to intentionally and aggressively get sales, so don’t get it twisted.

 

It’s not what they’re saying and doing… it’s who they’re talking to.

There’s no sales copy that’s ‘icky’.  There is no marketing method that’s ‘gross’.  It’s all about who you’re talking to and who is listening.

The truth is that no matter how carefully you craft your message, no matter how compassionate, caring, loving and giving you are with your words, no matter how hard you toiled to craft the perfect message (or how much money you paid someone to do it) that you think doesn’t sound ‘salesy’ —

I guarantee you, if you’re not finding and talking to the right crowd, there’s going to be a handful of people out there, no matter what you do, no matter what you say, they’re still going to think you sound gross to them.

 

The secret is that there is no secret. 

The fact is that some people will still think you sound salesy.  Who cares.  Because the people you want to attract won’t think you sound salesy.  Being salesy or non-salesy is not determined by the words you choose, not by your message, not by your strategies.  It’s about knowing who you want as a client, offering real solutions they need, giving real value,  and speaking right to their heart.

 

Let’s do a little eye-opening exercise…

Let’s take a little snippet of sales copy from someone that talks about being ‘non salesy’ and try to imagine that you are NOT their target market, that you don’t need and don’t care what they have to offer.

To make this easier to imagine, I’ll take the sales message that you DON’T think is salesy (because we are their ideal client, we love what they are offering) and replace what they are offering with something you DON’T WANT, and something you DON’T NEED, like a lawnmower or something, so it’s coming from someone that does not have us as an ideal client.

In the blue copy… When I remove the thing that you relate to, when I changed the words so that it was something you’re not even remotely interested in, and when I made it so that you are not the right person (target market) for the message… the ‘salesy-ness’ jumped right out at you, didn’t it?  It might have even made you roll your eyes, and even not want to finish reading because it felt so gross, and pushy.

But funny how you don’t feel that way when you read the copy in red, eh?

So sales is sales, period.  The only way it’s not going to be ‘received’ as ‘salesy’ is when you’re talking to the right crowd.  So you need to learn to LET GO of the fear that you will come across in a bad light.  You ALWAYS will look bad to people who don’t like what you offer, it’s the truth.  But the ones who you are called to serve, you will sound like their dream come true 🙂  Same ‘sales’ words being used…

The thing is that smart marketers and successful women mentors alike WRITE TO SELL/SERVE!

The words aren’t your enemy. 

It simply has to do with being honest and true in what you’re offering and knowing who you’re talking to so you can reach their heart.  There’s no word that’s bad in and of itself.  There’s no strategy in marketing that’s bad in and of itself.  That’s just silly thinking.

 

There are words that work and successful people use them.

Smart entrepreneurs actually study and draw inspiration from great copy that works.  It’s not copy that you personally think is great.  It’s copy that has actually proven its effectiveness by actually working as intended. Like a sales page or a product launch that brought in millions and millions of dollars in sales, time and time again like clockwork.
