building-a-listList building… ahhhhhh… we hear it every day… we know the value… we know that it is one of the most important efforts an entrepreneur can do to grow their business and increase their reach yet sometimes it seems more challenging than shooting a penny with a sniper rifle from 500 yards.

Yup, we’ve all heard the popular business phrase, “the money is in the list”, right?  I know preaching to the choir here… but what if you’ve reached a plateau where adding new subscribers is like pulling teeth?  What the heck do you do?

Don’t worry, we’ve got some great tips that can help revive your efforts and have your inbox dinging with new subscribers.

NOTE: These three tips are assuming that you have ALREADY created a funnel for generating targeted leads and you have established a ‘lead magnet’ or ‘freebie’ to offer folks. So here we go with the tips…

List Building Tip #1 Create Specific Landing Pages

This has to be one of the most common mistakes we see entrepreneurs make; they are relying on the opt-in form on their home page to do ALL of their list building.  Listen people!  Relying on your “home page opt-in form” to do all your list building is like cutting your lawn with scissors.  Sounds dumb, right?  That’s exactly my point!  Your one measly home page opt-in just can’t produce the results that a targeted, offer specific landing page will do for your list growth.  So put your scissors away and get that page created.  You’ll thank me next week!

List Building Tip #2 Facebook Ads

Yup, you read it right!  Facebook ads.  Once you have an offer specific opt-in page, with killer copy (oh if you need copy help and ideas here’s a great free resource, “Hot Words That Work It”) you definitely want to start driving targeted traffic to it and there is no better, more cost effective way to do this than with Facebook ads. 

Write your ad copy to match the offer, choose an image that attracts attention and then make sure you target the right audience and VOILA!  Let the magic happen!

List Building Tip #3 Create Urgency

Give your visitors a real reason to act now.  Make a special or additional offer available to “the next 100 subscribers”.  This creates urgency and a real sense of value that people will NOT want to miss out on.  They will quickly subscribe to make sure they get the special offer. 

Caution:  If you are going to use this tip make sure that you are being real!  If you are offering this to the first 100 then really make it ONLY for the first 100.  Remove the special after 100 people redeem it.  Or if you have time limits, remove the deal when that time has expired.  Don’t be sneaky and slimey and lie to manipulate people. 

We strongly believe that taking fast action is one of THE things that make people successful, so because of that, we strongly believe in rewarding people for taking action.  So we love giving bonuses and rewards to action-taking folks and using this method.  It’s a powerful thing.  But just don’t go all crazy with it and use it as manipulation, people WILL notice that your ’24 hour special’ is still going forever, haha, and you’ll undermine all your hard work at building yourself up as a trusted authority.

List building doesn’t have to be this mystical or challenging thing you just have to get creative, think outside the box, roll up your marketing sleeves and make it happen.
